Orange Juice – World Markets & Trade (April 08)

Highlight: While the Greek orange and lemon production was up this year, the tangerine production fell, primarily due to weather.

Highlight: The new crop of Japanese “unshu mikan” tangerines is expected to produce good quality fruit with total output of a little over one million metric tonness, up 27% from the previous season.
In 2007/08, citrus production in Israel is forecast at 634,500 tonness, unchanged from the previous year.
In 2008, lemon production is expected to increase to 1.4 million metric tonnes due to better yields and better management. The production in 2007 was 1.25 million metric tonnes.
Total orange juice production for 2008/09 is forecast at 7,307 MT. This sharp decline in production will likely be driven by a decline in deliveries of fruit to processors. The production of Valencia oranges, the variety traditionally used in orange juice manufacturing, has been suffering long term decline.
The Venezuelan juice processing industry depends on increasing fruit concentrate imports to meet rapidly growing domestic demand, a trend reinforced by processors shifting from milk products to more profitable juice production due to price ceilings placed on the former.
The Brazilian orange crop for 2007/08 is forecast at 448 MBx, up 8 MBx from 2006/07 due to improved yields. Total FCOJ production (65 Brix equivalent) for 2007/08 is forecast at 1.455 million metric tonnes(65 Brix), up 43,000 metric tonnes from the previous year. FCOJ exports for 2007/08 are projected to grow 3%.
